Inaugurated in 2010, the Burj Khalifa is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It has a total height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft, just over half a mile). Burj Khalifa has been the tallest structure and building in the world since 2009, displacing Taipei 101, the previous holder of that status. Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 and lasted until 2009. The primary structure is reinforced concrete and some of the structural steel for the building comes from the Palace of the Republic in East Berlin, the former East German parliament. The building is designed as the centerpiece of large-scale mixed-use development. The reason for the construction of this building is based on the government’s decision to diversify from an oil-based economy, and for Dubai to gain international recognition.
The designer is Adrian Smith whose company also designed the Willis Tower and One World Trade Center. Hyder Consulting was chosen as the supervising engineer and NORR Group Consultants International Limited was chosen to oversee the architecture of the project. The design is derived from the Islamic architecture of the region, such as in the Great Mosque of Samarra. The Y-shaped three-piece floor geometry is designed to optimize residential and hotel space. A supported central core and wings are used to support the height of the building. Although this design is derived from Tower Palace III, the central core of the Burj Khalifa houses all vertical transports with the exception of the exit stairs within each of the wings. The structure also has a cladding system designed to withstand the hot summer temperatures in Dubai. It contains a total of 57 elevators and 8 escalators.
At some point in the architectural and engineering process, the original Emaar developers ran into financial difficulties and needed more money and economic financing. Sheikh Khalifa, the ruler of the United Arab Emirates, provided monetary assistance and financing, hence the change of name to “Burj Khalifa”. The concept of profitability derived from building high-density developments and shopping centers around the monument has proved successful. The surrounding shopping malls, hotels, and condominiums in central Dubai generated most of the revenue from the project as a whole, while the Burj Khalifa itself made little or no profit.
The critical reception of Burj Khalifa has been generally positive and the building has received many awards. However, there were numerous complaints about migrant workers from South Asia, who were the main labor force in the construction industry. These focused on low wages and the practice of confiscating passports until the tasks were completed.
