London Airports – United Kingdom cheap flights
Six international airports and several smaller airports serve the metropolitan area of London, England, United Kingdom. Together, they make the busiest airport system in the world by passenger numbers and the second-busiest by aircraft movements. In 2018, the six airports handled nearly of 178 million passengers. The London airports handle over 60% of all the UK’s air traffic. The airports serve a total of 14 domestic destinations and 396 international destinations.
1. City (LCY) Airport
Transfers and shuttles from City Airport to London
London City Airport is located in London’s Newham district. This is located in London’s Docklands. It is closest to central London making it smaller in size – there is only 1 rather short runway. Only the smallest aircraft can use it, which initially prevented all long-haul flights. However, from 2009 to 2020, British Airways operated a flight to New York JFK, via Shannon, using an Airbus A318 – the largest aircraft that can be handled at London City Airport. The largest aircraft currently operating from the airport is the Airbus A220-100, slightly smaller than the Airbus A318, but with a longer range. It completed its first commercial flight from Zurich in August 2017.
London City Airport is just four miles from Canary Wharf. It is often used by business travelers, with many flights to destinations in the UK and Northern Europe. On both sides there are docks that prevent London City Airport from expanding. It is also the only airport serving London that does not operate at night.
A light rail service from London City Airport DLR station, which is adjacent to the London City Airport terminal building, connects it to the City of London’s financial district at Bank and Monument stations, which provide interchanges with the London Underground.
2. Heathtrow (LHR) Airport
Transfers and shuttles from Heathrow Airport to London
Compared to Gatwick, City, Luton, Stansted and Southend, Heathrow Airport is the largest of the six international airports serving London. The airport facility belongs to and is also operated by Heathrow Airport Holdingse. In 2021, it was the seventh busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic and eighth in Europe in terms of total passenger traffic.
Established in 1929 as a small airport, London Heathrow developed into a much larger airport after World War II.
London Heathrow is located 23 km west of central London on an area of 12.27 square kilometers or 4.74 square miles. It has two parallel east-west runways, four operational passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. It is the main hub for British Airways and the main operating base for Virgin Atlantic.
3. Gatwick (LGW) Airport
Transfers and shuttles from Gatwick Airport to London
London Gatwick in West Sussex, is the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom. The eighth in Europe and the second busiest airport with one runway in the world. It offers flights to more destinations than any other UK airport. Gatwick is also the main base of easyJet, the UK’s largest passenger airline. British Airways, Norwegian Air Shuttle and TUI Airways also use it as a base.
The airport has two terminals, namely North and South. It is connected to the motorway network via the M23 and has its own train station with trains to London Victoria and London Bridge. As well as a special Gatwick Express shuttle to and from London Victoria.
4. Luton (LTN) Airport
Transfers and shuttles from Luton Airport to London
Luton Airport is located in the south of Bedfordshire. It is London’s fourth largest airport, the fifth busiest in the UK and the fourth closest to central London after Gatwick, Heathrow and City airports. The airlines with the largest passenger capacity are the low-cost carriers easyJet and Wizz Air.
Luton Airport Parkway train station is a 22-minute train ride from London St Pancras. A shuttle bus connects Luton Airport Parkway to the airport, just over a mile away.
5. Stansted (STN) Airport
Transfers and shuttles from Stansted Airport to London
Stansted is located in Essex. It is the third busiest airport in London and the fourth busiest in the United Kingdom. After Manchester Airport it is the 22nd busiest in Europe. It is the largest operating base for Ryanair. Stansted serves most scheduled European destinations in the United Kingdom.
It is the home of Air Harrods allowing VIP planes to land there. For example, Air Force One with the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in 2009. And also President Donald Trump in 2017 and 2019.
Stansted Airport train station is located in the terminal building directly below the main concourse. Services to central London are on the Stansted Express train to and from London Liverpool Street.
6. Southend (SEN) Airport
Transfers and shuttles from Southend Airport to London
Southend Airport is located in Essex. Since 2011, its commercial air transport operations have primarily focused on destinations in Ireland. And since 2012 to the European mainland. This was accompanied by the start of the activities of easyJet, which previously had a brand new terminal and train station at its disposal. You would only need 15 minutes to get to the train with your hand luggage on arrival from the plane.
It was the third busiest airport in the UK from the 1960s to the late 1970s, when London Stansted Airport overtook Southend.
Southend Airport train station is served by Abellio Greater Anglia trains, which connect the airport with 8 connections per day with London Liverpool Street station. This journey takes about an hour.
Other airports
Birmingham Airport and Southampton Airport have been suggested as alternative airports to London. This is because of the direct rail connections to the center of London. Birmingham Airport has said High Speed upon completion would make it an option for London passengers.
