How to avoid that you loose your pet when you move

Apparently, it’s terrible when your pet runs away or you abandon it yourself. You feel it through the reaction of your vet. But what is against a population of wildered domestic cats or dogs? Also, how can you help that during a move especially your cat jumps through the ajar door? Weeks after you have left your old home the pet returns to it and finds that his masters are gone. There are stories that cats do hundreds and probably even thousands of kilomers (or miles) to find their family back but are there also stories about cats crossing the sea as stowaways on the ferry?
