A capsule hotel or a pod hotel has its origin in Japan. It features many rooms each just the size of a bed. These chambers are called “capsules”. Capsule hotels are cheap and simple and are for guests who don’t need or can afford larger, more expensive rooms. People with claustrophobia should not visit these types of hotels.

The world’s first capsule hotel dates back to 1979. That was the Capsule Inn Osaka, located in the Umeda district of Osaka, Japan and designed by Kisho Kurokawa. From there it spread to other cities in Japan. Since then, the concept has spread to several other areas.
