What to consider when traveling by car with snow?

Driving in snow can be challenging and even dangerous if you are not prepared. Snow can reduce your visibility, traction and control of your car, so you need to take some precautions before you hit the road. Here are some tips to help you drive safely in snowy conditions.

– Check your car before you leave. Make sure your car is in good shape for the snow by de-icing your windscreen, checking your lights, wipers, tyres and battery, and topping up your fuel tank. You should also pack a winter kit in case you get stuck or break down, including items like a shovel, blanket, torch, snacks and water.
– Plan your route carefully. Avoid driving in snow if you can, but if you have to, stick to main roads that are more likely to be gritted and cleared. Use a route planner to check for traffic updates and road closures, and allow extra time for your journey. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to arrive.
– Drive smoothly and gently. The key to driving in snow is being smooth with the steering wheel, accelerator and brakes. Avoid any sudden or harsh movements that could cause your wheels to slip or skid. Pull away in second gear, easing your foot off the clutch gently. Use low gears and engine braking to slow down, and touch the brake pedal lightly to show brake lights to others behind.
– Look ahead and anticipate. The slipperier it gets, the farther ahead you should look and think. Anticipate what you will need to do next, such as slowing down for turns, junctions or hills. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front, as stopping distances can be up to 10 times longer on snow and ice. If you see a flashing light on your dashboard, it means your wheels are losing traction, so ease off the accelerator until they regain grip.
– Know how to deal with skids. If you feel your car starting to slide, don’t panic. Look where you want to go, not where the car is heading. Steer gently in that direction and ease off the accelerator. Do not brake or accelerate abruptly, as this could make the skid worse. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), press and hold the brake pedal firmly until you stop. If you don’t have ABS, pump the brake pedal quickly and lightly until you stop.
