Save the cost of a taxi the public transport in Bulgaria

 

Generally spoken Bulgaria is known for being the cheapest destination within the EU. It’s not my intention to give you a review about the living cost in this country, but I wanted to share with you the price of some tickets people often ask for on Tripadvisor. It’s not obvious that you will find the information on your smartphone, often the program doesn’t find the information about public transport especially not when you depend on the airport’s free wifi.

The metro in Sofia, the capital

Being in touch about the existence of the metro and having an idea about where it runs can save you the cost of a taxi. When your plane arrives at its destination it is often late in the evening so that you’re just happy to jump in a taxi, the easiest way to arrive at your hotel. Even when you haven’t booked a hotel at all Bulgarian taxi drivers often are so helpful that they search for you for an affordable hotel to spend your first night. By which is not said that you may generalise. But in Bulgaria taxi drivers aren’t yet so much the victim of stress after a certain hour as is e.g. in Paris. But Bulgarian taxi drivers will also quite quickly deny that there is a bus or metro to your hotel.

It is easier to take the bus or metro back to the airport than the inverse. The airport is always much better known than any what area your hotel is situated in. In the eve of my sole night in Sofia after a taxi had dropped me at the hotel, I noticed that there was a metro stop near to my hotel. That there was a metro stop next to the airport I had seen already. I took the metro back for only 1,60 Levs, which is about 80 Euro cent.

Sofia has a metro indeed, although a simple one with one of its stops and you find the map and more here. You can download and install the app on your android for free. Although following the comments many complain about the simplicity of this app but you have the names of the stops both in English and in Bulgarian at least!

Take a look at the schedule and you’ll see that the metro hours are from 5:00 till 24:00 during working days and in the weekends although the frequency is much higher during the weekend.

If nevertheless you wish to travel by taxi, choose one of the taxi societies, they certainly are operable in Sofia also.
