Cyprus is an isle in the Eastern Mediterranean. It’s situated south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece. It is also a Republic divided into six districts: Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos.

The district of Paphos

Paphos District is in the western part of Cyprus. Its capital is Paphos. The entire district is controlled by the internationally recognized government of Cyprus. There are four municipalities in Paphos District: Paphos, Yeroskipou, Peyia, and Polis Chrysochous.

The area of the Paphos district is 1,396 km². That is 15.1% of the total area of the island. The population in 2011 was 90.295. Its coastal area is characterized by gulfs and coves, capes and points, beaches and tiny isles. The district can be divided into three morphological regions. First there is the coastal plain which is lying mainly below 200 metres. The hilly area extend from plain up to the igneous rocks of Paphos forest. The mountainous region are mainly on the igneous rocks of the Paphos forest. In the north-west of the district is the Akamas peninsula with a national park where the green sea turtle is a protected animal.

The Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis lying about two kilometres north of Paphos harbour in Cyprus. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The underground tombs date back to the 4th century BC and are carved out of solid rock. They are thought to have been the burial sites of Paphitic aristocrats and high officials up to the third century AD. Some of the tombs feature Doric columns and frescoed walls. Archaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site. The tombs are cut into the native rock, and at times imitated the houses of the living. Although known for centuries only from the 70s systematic excavation has been done.
