Kalampaka de stad aan de voet van Meteora rock, Greece

Meteora rock is 400 m high and has on its top an Eastern Orthodox monastery, the monastery of the Holy Trinity. This monastery makes part of 24 monasteries originally built in Meteora and of which 6 are always active and accessible to visitors.

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is in central Greece, situated in the Peneas Valley northeast of the town of Kalambaka.

How do people reach the top of this rock?

There are many possibilities to reach the top of this rock alone or in your private company. There are also a lot of organized trips with a lot of organization, too many to mention here.
If you travel unorganized you pay EUR 3 / monastery as entrance.

1. By public transport

Bus: With a local bus you can drive from the main square in Kalabaka to the farthest monastery. The bus is not expensive. Some call this bus ride scary and others think it’s not scary at all.
train: If you come from further afield, for example from Athens you can take the train to Kalambaka and then walk to Meteora. Kalambaka is located at the foot of Meteora.

2. By car

Beforehand: The roads are in good condition and parking is available at the individual monasteries.
By taxi: You can hire a taxi for EUR 25 to 30. To save on the taxi you can walk the way back (see below).

Rented or own car: You can drive your car between the monasteries to the parking lot(s). After that it is a short walk to do many stairs to each monastery.

Hitchhiking is also possible although it is difficult to predict whether you will be successful.

3. On foot

The entire trip there and back is best done in two days. So take enough water with you. You can walk up via the old footpath and then the footpath at the back of Meteora. You can then return to Meteora from above via Kastraki. People who have made the walk do not find them strenuous at all and above all a good opportunity for beautiful photo shots. 4. Organized

Mostly even in your hotel you can get informed about guides or busses travelling to the monasteries at the top of Meteora. Else you will certainly find one on Internet or via the links here below. The church was constructed between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites titled Meteora.
