The region lies largely on the Caribbean Plate and has more than 700 islands, islets, reefs and cays.

Geopolitically, the islands of the Caribbean (West Indies) are often considered a region of North America, although they are sometimes incorporated into Central America or left as a region of their own. They are organized into 30 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments and dependencies. Even if they are no longer dependent, the West Indies cricket team will continue to represent many of those countries.
