There has been a significant improvement in LGBT rights in 21st century Austria. Both male and female same-sex activities are legal. Registered partnership was introduced in 2010. This gave same-sex couples a share of the matrimonial rights. Adoption of stepchildren has been legalized since 2013. Full joint adoption was legalized in January 2015 by the Constitutional Court of Austria. The legalization of same-sex marriage came into effect on January 1, 2019.
