Varna in the Northern Bulgarian region is the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It is the third largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia (> 1,200,000 inhabitants) and Plovdiv (+ 340,000 inhabitants). Since 3 millennia has Varna been an important economic, social and cultural center due to its strategic location in the Gulf of Varna. It developed from a Thracian coastal town (Odessos) into a major seaport.
